Review: Maybelline 24h Color Tattoo

April 1, 2013

Given the fact that I’ve been raving on and on about Maybelline’s Color Tattoo’s, some of you may find it strange that there actually isn’t a decent review about them on my blog. There have been a few blogposts in which I talked about them, but now I’m finally taking the time to write something more elaborate about those lovely eyeshadows.

Let me first explain to you what they are. Maybelline New York describes them as gel-cream eyeshadows, to me they feel more creamy than gel-like. After you’ve applied them (you can do this with a brush, but I prefer using my fingers), they set and then they are supposed to stay on for ages.

I’ve recently bought the pink Color Tattoo, so now I own four – I think there are six or seven shades available in the Netherlands.

From left to right: #05 Eternal Gold, #65 Pink Gold, #40 Permanent Taupe and #35 On and on Bronze. Let’s swatch these babies!

As you can see, they are all very shimmery except for Permanent Taupe. The bottom picture was taken after I tried to remove the shadows by rubbing a make up wipe over them – they all faded away after multiple swipes. The two darkest ones are still visible, though, I leave it to you to decide whether this is a good thing or not.

This got me wondering… How long would they last without removing them? Of course, this 24 hours-claim can’t be true. Or can it?

Challenge accepted! The picture above shows my eyes directly after applying the On and on Bronze Color Tattoo to them, as well as some smudged dark brown eye pencil on my lash line, and a bit of black mascara.

When I came home from school the Color Tattoo had been sitting on my eyes for 8 hours, and this is what it looks like! It looks less intense, but other than that it’s still going strong.

These photographs are taken before I went to bed – I’m sorry about the different kind of lightning! About the eyeshadow: I know it looks different (because of the lightning), but I can tell you that it looked nearly the same as six hours earlier.  Maybelline 24h Color Tattoo

But then, after sleeping with the eyeshadow (is it just me or does this sound fairly strange?), it did pretty much fade away. Also, it started creasing – too bad!

24 hours, I don’t think so. Oh well, I don’t really mind that they don’t last when you go to bed, haha! One thing I do find important is whether they are waterproof or not. So I tried that as well!

For this test I used the other three eyeshadows: Pink Gold on the lid, Eternal Gold in my inner corner and Permanent Taupe in the crease.

After showering (and they did get wet, I promise you), my eyelids really didn’t change that much! The eyeshadows look a bit lighter and a the different colours are slightly more mixed up, but they did survive the shower.

My conclusion: although they don’t live up to the 24 hour-claim, these Color Tattoo’s are very long lasting. They look amazing, especially On and on Bronze and Pink Gold. And they are just so easy to work with! If you’d want to, you can apply one swipe and you’re done. Or you can use multiple shades and blend them together, everything is possible. By the way, that reminds me of something a make up artist on YouTube once said at the end of his video: ‘… whatever you want to do! You hold the brush, so you control.‘ That’s deep.

Love,

Suzanne
